I had the honor and joy of meeting Juan in the "AI-Manager" continuing education course. It is hard for me to describe Juan adequately. Saying "Juan is very good at what he does" is not enough. Although "very good" is already the top of the grading scale, it still does not do justice to Juan as a whole. The word "brilliant" would be an enhancement, but in my opinion a bit pretentious. Juan is that kind of person who is multi-talented, that is clear. At all times in the course he was able to grasp what was learned immediately or acquire the necessary knowledge within a very short time. This alone could be called outstanding, but still does not reflect the complete picture. Juan managed to think one step ahead and continually introduce improvements into his projects. One could say he simply always goes the "extra mile", but that would be too one-dimensional.
I thought long and hard about how to formulate an appropriate description. I have finally found the solution. Not long ago I read about Angela Duckworth and her research on "GRIT".
There is no exact German translation for "grit", but in summary it can be said that people with "grit" combine certain characteristics:
- Interest: Juan has varied interests and is enthusiastic about many topics
- Practice: Juan is very disciplined and stays at it until he has the solution he wants
- Purpose: Juan pursues a purpose. He uses his talents to do meaningful work and leave added value in the world
- Confidence: Juan believes in himself and the topics he pursues
Previously, the word "grit" was intangible for me; since last month, that has changed. As is well known, "experience" comes before "understanding". Thanks for expanding my horizon, I now understand.
